Wonton soup, a beloved Chinese comfort food, is a delightful blend of tender wontons and savory broth. This recipe guides you through creating this classic dish, from preparing the flavorful pork filling to crafting delicate wontons and simmering a fragrant broth.

Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a beginner, this easy-to-follow recipe will help you bring the comforting flavors of Chinese cuisine to your table.

Ingredients

For the Wontons

  • 1 pound ground pork (you can also use shrimp or a combination of both)
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 24 wonton wrappers

For the Broth

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 inch piece of ginger, sliced
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

Instructions

Make the Wontons

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the ground pork, chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, freshly grated ginger, a pinch of salt, and a dash of white pepper until well combined. Mix well.
  2. Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Place roughly 1 teaspoon of the pork filling into the center of each wrapper.
  3. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper over the filling, creating a triangle shape by aligning the edges. Bring the two bottom corners of the triangle together and pinch to seal.
  4. Continue the process with the rest of the pork filling and wonton wrappers.

Make the Broth

  1. Combine the chicken broth, ginger, and green onion in a large pot and boil over medium heat.
  2. Lower the heat to a gentle simmer and let it cook for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the ginger and green onion from the broth.

Cook the Wontons

  1. Heat a large pot of water until it boils.
  2. Add the wontons to the boiling water and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the wontons float to the surface.
  3. Remove the wontons from the water with a slotted spoon and place them in bowls.
  4. Ladle the hot broth over the wontons.
  5. Serve immediately, with a sprinkle of extra green onions if desired.

Tips

  • Feel free to use pre-made wonton wrappers, or you can use store-bought wonton wrappers.
  • You can use ground chicken or ground turkey if you don’t have ground pork.
  • You can customize the wonton filling by adding chopped shrimp or finely diced vegetables.
  • For a spicier broth, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a drizzle of chili oil.

Conclusion

You’ve captured the essence of Chinese comfort food with a bowl of homemade wonton soup. The soft, flavorful wontons, filled with a savory pork mixture, are a delightful contrast to the warm, soothing broth. This recipe is a testament to the simplicity and elegance of Chinese cuisine, offering a satisfying and heartwarming meal that’s perfect for any occasion. So, gather your ingredients, roll up your sleeves, and embark on a culinary journey to create this timeless dish.
